Management of Chronic Iron Overload in Myelodysplastic Syndrome - Episode 20
Iron overload is a reversible condition, as are some of the complications associated with excess iron, says Thomas D. Coates, MD. Iron chelation therapy is an effective way to treat iron overload, protecting the body from the damage associated with toxic levels of iron.
Is important to work with patients to ensure they are taking their medication, specifically since each of the available iron chelating agents has side effects that could lead to poor adherence, notes Coates. A high level of understanding and experience regarding iron chelation therapy can help overcome some of the barriers to treatment adherence. As iron overload is a rare disorder, adds Coates, many clinicians are unfamiliar with its management, warranting further education on the topic.
