-mutated non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). 

​Findings from the ​phase 2 DESTINY-Lung01 trial ​could provide the rationale that is needed to move trastuzumab deruxtecan into the first-line setting in this patient population, ​says Peters. ​Historically, EGFR and ALK inhibitors have demonstrated significantly improved progression-free survival when moved into the frontline setting, and the same could be true for trastuzumab deruxtecan.

Additionally, moving the therapy into the frontline setting may provide a more accurate representation of the associated toxicities, explains Peters. Treatments given in the second- and later-lines settings could display residual toxicities from earlier treatments, such as immunotherapy in this setting, concludes Peters.

Dr. Peters Discusses Ongoing Research With Trastuzumab Deruxtecan in NSCLC

Solange Peters, MD, PhD, of University Hospital Center Vaudois and Lausanne University in Switzerland, discusses the rapid advances in the lung cancer field and the importance of using biomarkers to create personalized immunotherapy treatments for patients.

In the past 3 to 5 years, the treatment paradigm of non—small cell lung cancer has completely changed, creating long-term survivor outcomes in metastatic disease and a number of novel treatment options, explains Peters. All patients should receive immunotherapy, ideally in the frontline setting, she explains.

There should be a heavier focus on precision oncology in NSCLC, including defining biomarkers for improved patient selection and understanding predictive factors to treatment. Creating algorithms for personalized immunotherapy will take some time, but Peters believes it is important in creating effective treatment. For sequencing, Peters recommends using single-agent or combination immunotherapy to treat patients with early-stage disease.

Dr. Peters on Creating Algorithms for Personalized Therapy in NSCLC

Solange Peters, MD, PhD, head of the Thoracic Malignancies Program in the Department of Oncology at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, discusses the FLAURA trial for patients with EGFR-mutated non—small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The FLAURA trial is investigating osimertinib (Tagrisso) versus standard of care in the frontline setting. The primary endpoint of this study is progression-free survival (PFS). The FLAURA trial has shown an improvement of PFS with 18.6 months.

It has also been discovered the osimertinib is a good regimen for CNS metastases, states Peters. Additionally, there was a beneficial toxicity profile for the patients who received osimertinib. According to Peters, osimertinib is the new standard of care for patient with EGFR-mutated NSCLC.
