Mitigating Racial Disparities in Oncology

In an effort to mitigate racial disparities in oncology, a number of actions must be taken, says Washington. The best place to start is by reviewing internal data within each institution, such as policies and procedures, ensuring that they are well-disposed to all populations. 

Many institutions have been doing a great job with this, although, more still has to be done, Washington adds.

Furthermore, the patient population that is treated at an institution should be reflective of the greater community. If a certain population is seeking treatment elsewhere or not at all, faculty should work to improve their outreach in addition to community education and engagement, Washington concludes.
