Markman Gains New Leadership Post at CTCA

Maurie Markman, MD, the editor-in-chief of OncologyLive magazine, has been named president of the Medicine & Science unit at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), a position that will enable him to focus on advancing the integration of clinical and translational research into patient care.

Markman, who has been serving as senior vice president of Clinical Affairs & National Director of Medical Oncology at CTCA, is an expert on research into gynecologic malignancies, new drug development, and novel management strategies, CTCA said in announcing his new appointment.

“His expertise in the field of medical oncology and clinical research, combined with his pioneering work in the emerging field of advanced genomic testing, will ensure we continue to deliver the very best clinical care to our patients,” CTCA President and CEO Gerard van Grinsven said in a statement.

Markman, who joined CTCA in 2010, has served in clinical leadership and academic positions at some of the nation’s most prominent medical institutions, including The Cleveland Clinic, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Ohio State University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Cornell University Medical College, and the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. He also has worked as a clinical associate of the National Cancer Institute’s Immunology Branch.

In addition to his work at CTCA, Markman has been appointed clinical professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Markman received his medical degree from New York University (NYU) School of Medicine and a master of science in Health Policy and Management from the NYU Graduate School of Public Administration. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital—NYU Medical Center.

A prolific writer, Markman recently coauthored Cancer Nutrition & Recipes for Dummies, a book that helps patients with cancer and their families cope with adverse events from oncology treatments through improved nutrition. As editor-in-chief of OncologyLive, Markman writes a regular monthly column and a quarterly series entitled “Controversies in Clinical Care.”

Markman indicated that he is excited about his new post at CTCA. “I am honored to have been selected to lead the impressive clinical team at CTCA, and look forward to lending my expertise to the continued advancement of the exceptional quality of care we deliver to our patients,” he said in a statement.

CTCA specializes in the treatment of patients with complex or advanced-stage cancers through its network of five hospitals in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Tulsa.
