Dr. Ku underscores key takeaways from the CheckMate649 and DESTINY-Gastric02 trials in gastric/GEJ cancer and highlights ongoing research that has the potential to further inform treatment selection and sequencing in the field
Welcome to OncLive On Air®! I’m your host today, Jessica Hergert.
OncLive On Air® is a podcast from OncLive®, which provides oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care. In both digital and print formats, OncLive® covers every angle of oncology practice, from new technology to treatment advances to important regulatory decisions.
In today’s episode, sponsored by Eli Lilly, we had the pleasure of speaking with Geoffrey Y. Ku, MD, a medical oncologist and head of the Esophagogastric Section in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, to discuss updates from the 2021 ESMO Congress in gastric cancer.
During the meeting, updated findings from the phase 3 CheckMate649 trial (NCT02872116) were presented, demonstrating a sustained improvement in progression-free survival and overall survival with the frontline combination of nivolumab (Opdivo) plus chemotherapy vs chemotherapy alone in patients with advanced gastric, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), or esophageal cancer.
Also during the meeting, the primary results of the phase 2 DESTINY-Gastric02 trial were presented. The findings revealed a 38% overall response rate with fam-trastuzumab deruxtecan-nxki (Enhertu) as a second-line treatment in a Western population of patients with HER2-positive gastric/GEJ cancer.
In our exclusive interview, Ku underscored key takeaways from the CheckMate649 and DESTINY-Gastric 02 trials in gastric/GEJ cancer and highlighted ongoing research that has the potential to further inform treatment selection and sequencing in the field.
