In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with faculty from the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson Health. We spoke with Andrew Chapman, DO, FACP, and Kristine Swartz, MD, medical oncologists and codirectors of the Jefferson Senior Adult Oncology Center; Lora Rhodes, MSW, LSW, an oncology social worker; Ginah Nightingale, PharmD, an associate professor of pharmacy practice; and Melissa Denton, RDN, CNSC, LDN, a nutritionist.
In our exclusive interview, Chapman, Swartz, Rhodes, Nightingale, and Denton discussed disparities related to COVID-19 in older patients with cancer. These faculty highlighted the evolution of Jefferson Health’s Senior Adult Oncology Center, the unique needs of older adults who develop cancer, and challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic that have affected the care of geriatric patients with cancer, such as the strain put on caregivers and the shift to telemedicine. They concluded by highlighting important next steps that each specialty can take to offer safe, accessible treatment and additional care opportunities throughout the pandemic.
