Sonali M. Smith, MD, discusses unmet clinical needs in indolent lymphomas.

Sonali M. Smith, MD, Elwood V. Jensen Professor in Medicine, interim chief, Section of Hematology/Oncology, director, Lymphoma Program, University of Chicago Medicine, discusses unmet clinical needs in indolent lymphomas.

Prognostication at diagnosis is an area that needs to be better fleshed out, explains Smith.

Although prognostic indices such as the Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI), the M7-FLIPI, and the FLIPI-2 are helpful for certain groups of patients, they have not been validated and are not applicable to individual patients, says Smith.

Additionally, establishing time-limited therapies that are well tolerated is critical to move the field forward, concludes Smith.
