Nirav N. Shah, MD, assistant professor, Medical College of Wisconsin, discusses ongoing research with CAR T-cell therapy.
There are many studies evaluating future applications of CAR T cells and other cellular therapies, Shah says. There are armored CAR T cells being studied; these differ from the products currently on the market and may prove to be more effective, says Shah. In addition, ongoing research is looking at dual-targeted CAR T cells as well as sequential CAR T-cell therapy.
Moreover, some institutions are studying the role of a different type of immune effector cell called an NK cell. CAR NK is a construct that researchers hope is on the rise as another potential option for patients who have failed traditional treatments, Shah adds.
