Dr. Mehta Discusses the Reliability of Automated Segmentation for Lung Volumes in Multiple Cancers

Niraj Mehta, MD, Radiation Oncologist, 21st Century Oncology, discusses the reliability of automated segmentation for lung volumes in breast, lung, and esophageal cancers.

Mehta says 21st Century Oncology partnered with the Barretos Cancer Hospital in Brazil, a large rural cancer hospital that treats about 500 patients per day.

In radiation oncology, there have been a lot of technological advances that require a lot of time to produce complicated plans. In Barretos, Mehta says they were using software to automatically contour the lungs in patients with breast, lung, and esophageal cancers. Mehta and his team set out to determine how much time this new software would save and the accuracy of the software when compared to manual contouring.

Mehta says the study found that the contouring software is effective and accurate when compared with manual contouring. In a busy clinic that is treating a lot of patients, it can save valuable man-hours, Mehta says.
