Dr. Hudis Highlights Two Abstracts From ASCO 2013

Clifford A. Hudis, MD, ASCO President-Elect, describes the focus on global medicine at the 2013 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.

Clifford A. Hudis, MD, ASCO President-Elect and chief of the Breast Cancer Medicine Service and attending physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, describes the focus on global medicine at the 2013 ASCO Annual Meeting.

The overarching theme of this year's conference was Building Bridges to Conquer Cancer, Hudis points out. Two important abstracts presented at the meeting crystallize this theme succinctly. The first, Hudis explains, was a trial looking at screening for cervical cancer in India using vinegar. This trial showed that a low cost simple tool was capable of allowing physicians to detect cancer to greatly reduce mortality.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hudis notes, is the aTTom trial, which represents a nice collaboration with the ATLAS trial that was presented at SABCS. This trial further supports the efficacy of giving 10 years of tamoxifen, rather than 5, with favorable results.
