Adilia Hormigo, MD, PhD, director of the neuro-oncology program, professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and medicine, Tisch Cancer Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, discusses the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on high density areas.
There have been less admissions to the intensive care unit at Mount Sinai and other metropolitan hospitals, suggesting that New York City may be past the peak of COVID-19, says Hormigo.
However, it is hard to determine when the city can safely begin to open. When the city does reopen, it is unlikely to operate as it did prior to the pandemic, says Hormigo. For such dense areas such as New York City, it will be difficult to enforce social distancing.
