Paul M. Harari, MD, discusses the new upright delivery method of proton radiation therapy in cancer care.
Paul M. Harari, MD, chair, Department of Human Oncology, radiation oncologist, faculty, the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health, discusses the new upright delivery method of proton radiation therapy in cancer care.
Compared with other forms of radiation therapy, proton radiation is considered one of the most precise forms of radiation therapy, Harari says. Proton radiation therapy accurately deposits the radiation in the tumor to limit adverse effects to normal tissue, Harari explains.
Notably, this proton radiation therapy is delivered with the patient sitting in an upright position, compared with the traditional position of a patient lying on their back, Harari adds. UW Health will be the first location in the world to offer this treatment in an upright position, Harari concludes.
