George Somlo, MD, medical oncologist, City of Hope, discusses treatment considerations in multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma patients are very well educated and often come to appointments with a list of relevant clinical trials and ask educated questions, said Somlo. That is why it is important that treatment decisions a collaborative effort between the oncologist and the patient, he says.

Oncologists should be aggressive with their treatment and think long-term when making treatment decisions. Because patients can live with multiple myeloma for many years, it should be treated like a chronic illness and treatments should be selected that are both effective and allow the patient to maintain their quality of life, says Somlo.
