Andrea Facciabene, PhD, research associate professor of radiation oncology, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Penn Medicine, discusses investigating the use of bridging radiation therapy prior to CAR T-cell therapy in mice models.
This research hypothesized that bridging therapy with radiation can be utilized maintain tumor size while T cells are being produced, Facciabene says. Furthermore, it was investigated if radiation in combination with T-cell therapy could amplify the impact of the T cells, Facciabene adds.
A20 cells were implanted into both flanks of the animals, and 1 side was treated with radiotherapy prior to the administration of T-cell therapy, Facciabene continues. These examinations displayed of a synergy between CAR T-cell therapy and radiation therapy, Facciabene explains. The benefits of radiation were observed both tumor sites, Facciabene concludes.
