Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS, director, Comprehensive Prostate Center, discusses current testing patterns in urology practices.
A large number of patients are seen in the community, says Concepcion. In order to evaluate the use of hereditary testing in such settings, Concepcion constructed an 8-question online survey that was submitted to all Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA) member groups. Among about 149 member groups within LUGPA, about 52 groups responded.
The responses showed that the majority of practices were aware of the statement from the Society of Urologic Oncology supporting hereditary testing, says Concepcion. About two-thirds of the practices who responded had already incorporated hereditary testing into their practices, and another 25% were in the process of developing an in-house testing program.
