Elisa K. Chan, MD, radiation oncologist, Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada, discusses improving mammography screening rates with signed letters from physicians. Chan worked for the BC Cancer Agency during the study.

In this study, family physicians signed pre-printed mammography screening reminder letters. After six months, an absolute improvement of 10% was observed. Improvement was seen regardless of age, number of previous screenings, and years overdue.

If women come back for screening on a regular basis, Chan said, recall rates will improve in the long term.
