Jubilee Brown, MD, a professor and associate director of Gynecologic Oncology at Levine Cancer Institute, of Atrium Health, discusses the utility of minimally invasive surgery in ovarian cancer.

An area of focus in ovarian cancer is minimally invasive surgery; this is often utilized at the time of diagnosis, as well as in patients with early-stage disease for primary debulking and to help with staging, says Brown.

Moreover, minimally invasive surgery can also be utilized without detriment to determine whether a patient is a good candidate for primary surgery or they should receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy instead; this is where the Fagotti score should be examined, as it can be used to determine which patients are candidates for which approach, Brown concludes.
