Deanna J. Attai, MD, assistant clinical professor, Department of Surgery, UCLA, discusses a 5-year follow up of patients receiving accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) using strut-based applicators.
In this trial, patients were treated with APBI and followed over time. After a median follow up of 5 years, data showed that local recurrence rates and cosmetic outcomes were excellent. Results were comparable to other studies of partial breast irradiation.
This 5-year data supports the use of partial breast irradiation, Attai says, especially with a strut-based applicator.
