Primo Lara, MD, the associate director of Translational Research at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, and his son, Matthew Stephen Lara, discuss an analysis of predictors of survival for younger patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

In the study, researchers collected data from patients with lung cancer from the California Cancer Registry. They then narrowed it down to young patients with NSCLC, the cutoff at 50 years old. Researchers found that younger patients did better than older patients.

The analysis also found that the proportion of young patients developing NSCLC is decreasing, as opposed to other research data, which have suggested that it is increasing. The relative proportion of patients less than 50 years old has declined by 22% over the past decade.
