Recent technological developments have drastically altered neurosurgeons approach the care of patients with cancer, Redjal says. For instance, stereotactic radiosurgery has replaced typical surgery in approximately 40% of patients, Redjal adds. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a noninvasive procedure used to deliver radiation to small tumors through non-surgical means.

Additionally, intraoperative planning has allowed surgeons to utilize minimally invasive techniques for patients with tumors that could potentially lead to significant morbidity and cause neurologic disfunction, Redjal concludes.
