Biomarkers are important for determining which immunotherapy regimen a patient should receive, says Zandberg. Currently, in head and neck cancer there has not been an identified biomarker to predict response to these therapies.

The phase II HAWK trial investigated durvalumab in patients with metastatic head and neck cancer who were PD-L1 high, states Zandberg. Promising outcomes were seen with an overall response rate (ORR) of 16% and durable response of 55%. The median overall survival was 7 months with a 1-year survival of 33%.

Dan Zandberg, MD, assistant professor, medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine, discusses the HAWK trial of durvalumab (Imfinzi) in patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

Overall response rate in this phase II trial was 16% with durable responses. Median overall survival was 7 months and a 1-year survival rate of 33%.

Additionally, patients who were HPV positive had a response rate higher than those who were HPV negative.
