When prostate cancer metastasizes, it typically spreads to the bone, Lynch explains. Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, particularly in Lynch's lab, are investigating how cancer cells metastasize to the bone and how they interact with the bone environment in order to grow.

These metastases can lead to extensive bone formation, which are osteosclerotic types of lesions that often occur in areas of the patients who are weight-bearing. These can be extremely painful and greatly affect patient quality of life, he adds.
